Explore William and Mary Hillel

William and Mary Hillel is based out of the Shenkman Jewish Center, which is only six years old. The SJC has a kosher kitchen under the supervision of the local kashrut organization and is an amazing, state of the art facility. Students are welcome to make the Shenkman Jewish Center their home away from home. Hillel offers programming such as Israel related events, social programs, religious and cultural events, and lots of events surrounding food. Jewish Experience Through Hillel

We have a full time rabbi, weekly Jewish educational programming, a warm and inviting Jewish student community, and being Jewish on campus is not a challenge. We have students at all levels of observance. Our campus is safe for Jewish students and supported by the university administration in every way.

Campus Climate for Jewish Students

Kosher Dining

We are currently working with the university to create a kosher dining plan. There are nearby stores that sell packaged products and stores driving distance away that sell kosher meats, but we hope to have more kosher options in the near future. If a potential student is interested please contact Rabbi Litt at 757-559-1836.

Options: Meals available on shabbat/holidays only;Kosher food available nearby

Religious Services

Every Friday night there is a student led Shabbat program. We have a Shabbat dinner every week. We offer a complete High Holiday program with choices of local synagogues from every denomination. There is a Rosh Hashana meal at Hilell that typically sees over 75-90 students attending as well as Passover seders which, this past year, had over 160 in attendance. All Jewish holidays are observed, all food at Hillel is kosher, and our programming allows for Shabbat observance.

Wellness, Inclusion, and Activism

Our Hillel has a strong activism component with various types of programming involving social action, tikun slam projects, and tzedakkah initiatives. All of our programming is student led and our students partner with outside organizations like Gift of Life and others to promote wellness, health, and caring for others.
